Why "Pass Rate" Means Nothing (And What Actually Predicts PMP Success)
The Number That Sells Courses
Visit any major PMP prep course website. Within three seconds, you'll see a number: 90%+ pass rate. Sometimes 95%. Occasionally an audacious 98%.
These numbers are everywhere. They're also essentially meaningless — and understanding why they're meaningless will tell you more about how to actually prepare than any testimonial or curriculum overview.
The Self-Selection Problem
Here's the core issue: PMP prep companies don't have random samples.
The people who buy a $300–$600 prep course and use it are, by definition, more motivated than the average candidate. They've invested money. They've cleared time. They're tracking their progress.
Meanwhile, people who buy the course, fall behind, feel under-prepared, and don't schedule their exam — they disappear from the denominator. They don't count as a "non-pass" because they never tested.
Even among people who test, the highly engaged students who finish practice questions, rewatch lectures, and use every feature are dramatically overrepresented in the passing count compared to people who casually read through and hoped for the best.
A "90% pass rate" means: of the people who bought our course, tested, and let us follow up — 90% passed. That is a wildly different thing from "90% of people who study this material pass the exam."
The Follow-Up Problem
Many prep providers claim pass rates based on voluntary self-reporting or a subset of students they were able to reach after testing.
Someone who passes is far more likely to email a company saying "I passed!" than someone who didn't. The follow-up bias compounds the self-selection bias. The denominator gets smaller and skews toward passers.
So What Actually Predicts Success?
This is the more useful question. Based on the research literature on high-stakes professional certification exams and from what we're observing in GanttGrind data, the best predictors of PMP exam success are:
1. Domain Coverage Breadth
How much of the exam's content you've actually practiced matters more than how deep you've gone in any one area.
A candidate who has touched 80% of subtopics at moderate depth consistently outperforms someone who has mastered 40% of subtopics while never encountering the rest. The PMP is too broad for deep specialization to compensate for coverage gaps.

2. Scenario-Based Performance, Not Definition Recall
PMP questions are scenario-based. The correct answer to "you're a PM and your stakeholder is upset about a scope change" doesn't require you to have memorized the PMBoK definition of integrated change control — it requires you to have practiced reasoning through that scenario until the right response pattern is instinctive.
Candidates who score well on scenario questions consistently outperform candidates who score well on definition recall but struggle with situational application.
When reviewing practice questions, always ask: not just what the right answer is, but why the other three options are wrong. That's where the learning happens.
3. Full Exam Simulation History
Completing at least one timed, full-length practice exam before test day is strongly associated with passing. Four hours is long. Pacing discipline matters. People who've never simulated a full exam tend to run out of time or fatigue more severely in the final third — and the last 30–40 questions are where score differentials often emerge.
4. Consistent Low-Volume Practice Over Time
Spacing matters. The research on spaced repetition is unambiguous: reviewing material across multiple sessions over multiple weeks produces dramatically better long-term retention than cramming the same material in two intensive sessions.

5. Calibration Over Confidence
One of the strongest predictors of failing is being over-confident about areas you haven't actually tested yourself on. Candidates who spend more time with material they already understand (because it feels good) than with material they've identified as weak are systematically underinvesting where it matters.
This is the single biggest argument for data-driven practice over self-directed reading: you will not accurately identify your weak areas through introspection. You need external calibration. Mastery scores and coverage gaps are more reliable than your own sense of readiness.

Not a marketing claim. An actual statistical estimate that gets better as more candidates contribute their score reports.
If you've already sat for the exam — pass or not — upload your score report. Every outcome makes the predictions more accurate for everyone who comes after you.
The Practical Takeaway
Stop comparing yourself to a company's pass rate. It doesn't tell you anything about your specific preparation.
Ask instead:
- What percentage of the content outline have I actually practiced?
- Where is my mastery score lowest by domain and subtopic?
- Have I completed at least one full timed simulation?
- Am I practicing consistently, or in bursts?
Those are the variables that matter.
